NATO was formed on April 4, 1949 to help secure peace in Europe during the Cold War. After the war ended, NATO began helping any of the nations of the UN solve conflicts and supply them with troops if needed. Eventually they became the UN's main military branch, but the Third World War ended, NATO was condemned for war crimes, and decommissioned.
